Friends,

I wanted to share this email with you to make sure you knew about the Washoe County School District meeting today at 12:30 pm.

They’re meeting to discuss the endorsement of a declaration in opposition of allowing teachers and other school staff the ability to protect their students.

We need you to attend this meeting and voice your opinion. Tell WCSD that you support the right of teachers to arm themselves and protect their students!

If you can’t make it to the meeting, please contact the Washoe County School District, forward this message to your friends, and donate to help us get the message out!

Attention those that care about School Safety!

The Washoe County School District is endorsing a declaration opposed to arming staff and teachers on campus. See below. Pass the word and come speak at Public Comment on this issue.

Tuesday, June 12, 2018 Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees 1. Opening Items 1.01 Call to Order - 12:30 p.m. - Administration Building, Board Room 425 E. Ninth Street Reno, Nevada

3.01 CONSIDERATION OF APPROVAL OF WASHOE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD RESOLUTION 18-003, A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE WASHOE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT REAFFIRMING THEIR COMMITMENT TO A SAFE AND SECURE LEARNING AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT, AND DECLARING THEIR OPPOSITION TO PROPOSALS TO ARM EDUCATORS AND EDUCATION SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS IN OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS (FOR POSSIBLE ACTION)

WHEREAS, teachers are not trained law enforcement officers, and should not be asked or incentivized to keep weapons accessible in their classrooms;

WHEREAS, the Washoe County School District Police Department, National Association of School Resource Officers, and other law enforcement professionals fully trained and certified in the use of fire arms do not support the arming of educators or educational support professionals;

WHEREAS, there is no evidence that supports the arming of educators and education support professionals would decrease school safety;

WHEREAS, an increase in firearms on campus creates a greater risk to students and staff by the possibility of accidental or intentional discharge of a firearm, or the loss or theft of a firearm;

WHEREAS, schools across the country need considerable additional resources to plan for the possibility of such acts of violence, coordinate with law enforcement, and secure their buildings from intruders;

WHEREAS, federal agencies, including the Departments of Education, Justice, and Homeland Security, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in a careful and comprehensive advisory on school emergency preparedness, emphasized that the possibility of school gun violence did not in any way justify the arming of school personnel other than trained law enforcement officers;

WHEREAS, those law enforcement officers entrusted with securing the safety of the Nation’s schools have publicly and emphatically opposed the arming of public school educators and education support professionals because of the inherent and unavoidable risks to students, educators, school staff, and law enforcement personnel;

Here is why they are jumping the gun in addition about being wrong in opposing blanket prohibition on armed staff:

•    The Governor's "Nevada Statewide School Safety Task Force" is still meeting. It would be premature for the board to make such a declaration without waiting for the results of that committee.

•    The declaration is months away from the election with three school board seats open and seems a push to act prematurely rather than allow the new board to make that decision.

Let's not act before all the facts and reports are in.
